Akae is an international literary journal centered on race and racial representation in literature.

We particularly seek work by Black writers, Asian writers, Indigenous writers, Latinx writers, Middle Eastern writers, Pacific Islander writers, and multiracial writers. We also welcome LGBTQ+ writers and work from communities that remain underrepresented in mainstream literary publishing.

We are interested in literature that confronts racism or examines race without reducing it to a lesson for the reader. We want writing that gives serious literary attention to lives and communities that have too often received limited space in major literary publications.

Our editorial taste is deliberately adventurous. We want work that takes formal risks and refuses to become predictable simply because its subject is politically important. Experimental writing is especially welcome when the form feels necessary to the work.

Akae exists because representation in literature is shaped by who gets published. By creating an international publication that actively seeks writers who remain underrepresented in mainstream literary spaces, we hope to widen access to literary publication and bring more racial perspectives into contemporary literary conversation.

*A submission does not have to address race. Our racial focus describes what we actively seek out; it does not turn identity or subject matter into a requirement.
